قال شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية عن الشيعة:
((فَأَصْلُ بِدْعَتِهِمْ مَبْنِيَّةٌ عَلَى الْكَذِبِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَتَكْذِيبِ الْأَحَادِيثِ الصَّحِيحَةِ؛ وَلِهَذَا لَا يُوجَدُ فِي فِرَقِ الْأُمَّةِ مِنْ الْكَذِبِ أَكْثَرُ مِمَّا يُوجَدُ فِيهِمْ بِخِلَافِ الْخَوَارِجِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُعْرَفُ فِيهِمْ مَنْ يَكْذِبُ وَالشِّيعَةُ لَا يَكَادُ يُوثَقُ بِرِوَايَةِ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مِنْ شُيُوخِهِمْ لِكَثْرَةِ الْكَذِبِ فِيهِمْ؛ وَلِهَذَا أَعْرَضَ عَنْهُمْ أَهْلُ الصَّحِيحِ))
